SMPTE
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), is a global society of more than 5,000 members, including creative professionals, media technologists, and engineers. Members serve the industry through Standards Technology Committees with 800 engineering standards and guidelines developed to advance global interoperability of hardware and software; advance industry learning through vast educational offerings; and access a network of mentors and colleagues via local and global industry events.
SMPTE has helped advance the motion-imaging industry through all of its major transitions to date. From the advent of sound and color to the shift from analog to digital formats, SMPTE has been at the forefront of some of the most iconic standards for high-quality content, as well as those that are facilitating the transition to an IP-based multiscreen world -- including talent identification and digital replicas.
Today's key standards include Material eXchange Format (MXF), Interoperable Master Format (IMF), and Serial Digital Interface (SDI and HD-SDI), while emerging standards, like High Dynamic Range (HDR) and ST 2110 for digital video over IP, continue to ensure that all areas of the industry have a common foundation for development, operation, and quality.
SMPTE is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and recognized by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as an Approved Reference Organization.
